Our Philosophy

As a science-based company, it's important to us that the claims we make are based on concrete definitions and supported by evidence.

Words often seen on product labels are usually open to interpretation from one company or consumer to the next. As a result, one word can mean different things to different people, making it unhelpful as a measuring stick for the information you need.

With this in mind, we want to help our customers understand what it is we're doing with full transparency and in terms that have clear definitions, so that you get the information that matters to you most.

All our ingredients are:

Plant-based

For the reasons above, we refer to our ingredients as "plant-based" over something like "natural". All of our ingredients are botanically-sourced, which is a fancy way of saying that they're derived from plants.

Biome-Friendly

This one is probably not surprising! We test all ingredients and final formulas to ensure that they are compatible with the microbiome on the skin.

Non-petroleum based

We formulate our products with non-petroleum based ingredients, which are biodegradable and more environmentally sustainable than ingredients that are derived from petroleum. All of our ingredients are derived from plant-based materials.

Earth-friendly

We try to create products that are as good to the environment as they are on our microbiome. So, our products are made without ingredients derived from petroleum, don't contain preservatives, and are easily biodegradable.

Beyond formulation:

Policy on Animal Testing

Mother Dirt are never tested on animals. Because we believe in being fully honest and transparent, we want to make you aware that Mother Dirt is a wholly owned division of AOBiome, LLC, a biopharmaceutical company engaged in high level bio-therapeutic research and testing. The FDA requires animal testing on Ammonia-Oxidizing Bacteria as part of their process to ensure that pharmaceuticals are both safe and effective and there is no way around this process. This applies only to the AOB found in our AO+ Mist. This does not apply to our biome-friendly products.

AOBiome is committed to work with the FDA to find alternatives to animal testing whenever possible and to minimize animal testing when no alternative is available. We are a contributing member of the ASCCT, a scientific society dedicated to the promotion of toxicology testing and research that reduces and replaces the use of animals.

Impurity Testing

A lot can happen on the way to bottling a product, along the supply chain as well as during manufacturing. Despite the careful steps taken by our suppliers and manufacturers, there is always potential for presence of impurities in raw materials, occurrence of cross-contamination during manufacturing, or formation of by-products after formulation. Because of this, we test our finished products to make sure that no unwanted chemicals make their way into our products by surprise. This testing is not required, but something we believe important to do.

The chemicals we test for include:

  • Heavy metals (lead, mercury, cadmium, arsenic)
  • 1,4 dioxane
  • Bisphenol A (BPA)
  • Nitrosamines
  • Phthalates
  • Parabens

Track record & partnerships:

We are committed to making a world where clean comes with healthy once again, and we know we can't do it alone.
This is why it's been important from the beginning that we hook arms with organizations with overlapping values.

MADE SAFE® Certified

We're committed to putting consumer safety first, and providing full transparency to the ingredients we use when formulating our biome-friendly products. The MADE SAFE seal verifies that the AO+ Mist is free of any chemicals known to harm human health or the environment.

Campaign for Safe Cosmetics

A project of the Breast Cancer Fund, works to promote the development of safer cosmetics. The Campaign focuses on educating the public, working towards legislative changes, and advocating for corporate accountability. Since 2004, the Campaign has helped reduce the use of toxic chemicals in cosmetics and increase the level of disclosure and transparency of cosmetic companies.

The Microbiome Coalition

In 2016, the White House announced the launch of The National Microbiome Initiative (NMI). With $121 million in federal funding and $400 million in private funding, the initiative aims to provide a big boost to our understanding of the global microbiome.

ASCCT

The American Society for Cellular and Computational Toxicology (ASCCT) is a scientific society dedicated to the promotion of toxicology testing and research that reduces and replaces the use of animals.

GC3
(Green Chemistry and Commerce Council)

GC3 is a network of companies, NGOs, and other organizations fostering a science-minded community and working together to promote green chemistry and reduce the use of toxic chemicals throughout manufacturing supply chains. GC3 members collaborate to develop green chemistry tools, policies, innovations, and business practices.
