Mother Dirt Recycling FAQ

We're happy to hear that so many of our customers are environmentally-minded. We do our best to make sure that our product impacts the environment as little as possible. While we are currently looking to reduce our packaging materials, until we find a solution we want you to know that you can recycle all of the Mother Dirt packaging.

We hope this helps keep our environment clean, and that soon we can do even better and reduce our packaging materials. Thanks for your concern!

Most of the components we use in our packaging are comprised of mixed materials, which are recyclable but aren't labeled as such. Here is the breakdown:

Mist:
  • The pump is polypropylene (#5), with high and low density PE parts as well, (#2 and #4)
  • The bottle is primarily polypropylene (#5), with mixed polymer PE again for the bag liner (#2 and #4)
  • The label is polypropylene (#5)
  • There are also no safety issue with the bottle having previously contained bacteria.

Moisturizer:
  • The pump is polypropylene (#5), with high and low density PE parts as well, (#2 and #4)
  • The bottle is PET (Polyethylene terephthalate) (#1), and so is the overcap
  • The label is polypropylene (#5)

Shampoo:
  • The pump is polypropylene (#5), with high and low density PE parts as well, (#2 and #4)
  • The bottle is polypropylene (#5), with HDPE for the piston inside (#2)
  • The label is polypropylene (#5)

Cleanser:
  • The pump is polypropylene (#5), with high and low density PE parts as well, (#2 and #4)
  • The bottle is HDPE (#2)
  • The label is polypropylene (#5)

Boxes:
  • For the boxes, all printed materials are 100% recyclable in paper recycling streams.

Insulated Mailers (the space-looking envelopes):
  • Our insulated mailers can be put into recycling bins and will be treated as mixed materials (foil, plastics). Some municipalities will just toss them, but it's worth putting them in there for the ones that will process it!

Gel packs:
  • The gel inside the cold packs we use to keep the mist cool can be cut and poured down the sink with plenty of water. They are made with cellulose thickener and are biodegradable and/or compostable.
  • The packs themselves are mixed fibres, similar to the insulated mailers (in this case mixed HDPE and LDPE polymers and cellulose non-wovens).
  • They can also be tossed into the recycling bin (and are not compostable or biodegradable).
