Get to know Kate Kordsmeier, clean living and clean eating expert from Root + Revel, in this edition of #RealRoutines
As a food writer, Kate Kordsmeier has what many of us would deem a dream job. But it wasn't always as glamorous as it sounds. In October 2015 Kate was diagnosed with myriad health issues. Since diet can greatly affect your health, being a food writer and constantly having to sample all kinds of food became much more of a challenge.
But Kate managed to get it all under control and saw a amazing changes in her body and well being through simple changes. By taking a more natural and holistic approach to her diet and lifestyle, she found the balance she needed to feel good and keep it manageable. Lucky for us, she shares that wealth of knowledge through her amazing blog Root + Revel.
She's been a big supporter of Mother Dirt for a long time and we're really thrilled to give her the spotlight in #RealRoutines!
Walk us through your daily skincare routine, and how do you work Mother Dirt into your daily regimen?
I am extremely picky about the products I put on my body, reading labels like a hawk and often making my own because I can’t find options that are clean enough (plus, it's it’s cheaper!). It’s amazing the amount of toxic chemicals and harmful ingredients allowed in our personal care products. Right now, I make my own toner, makeup remover and moisturizer. I love Mother Dirt's cleanser--a lot of the natural cleansers I’ve tried don’t foam up enough or leave my skin feeling clean enough. But as you can see here, Mother Dirt’s cleanser is super foamy and with just two pumps, all of my makeup is removed and my skin is left feeling soft and nourished, rather than dry and stripped, which is how most chemical cleansers made me feel. You don’t want to completely remove all the bacteria and oil from your skin, you want to get rid of the dirt and grime and preserve what’s good.
How do you explain Mother Dirt to other people?
Mother Dirt is a line of safe, natural skincare and shampoo for men and women specifically designed to restore and nurture the good bacteria on your skin. Mother Dirt’s products all help users maintain a balanced microbiome on their skin, resulting in an improvement in the look and feel of their skin, from improved hydration, more balanced oil production (which helps with both oily and dry skin) and improvements in body odor.

I spray the AO+ Mist, which is a probiotic spray made with live AOB (Ammonia-Oxidizing Bacteria), on my face 2-3 times per day. Usually, I use this mist after washing my face or showering, or after a workout. Not only does it feel amazingly refreshing and soothing, but I’ve noticed a clear improvement in my skin.
Why do you feel it’s important to maintain a healthy microbiome?
If we don’t have enough diversity in our bacterial ecosystem, or if we have too much of the “bad bacteria” and not enough of the “good bacteria,” we may be predisposed to obesity, chronic disease, and infection. Research has even shown that the healthier your microbiome, the better your metabolic health (which is why addressing digestion and gut issues is so important for people, like me, who struggle with insulin resistance, an important marker for metabolic health, or unexplained weight gain). Put another way–if you’re having trouble losing weight, the reason could lie in your microbiome. Side note: This is also why antibiotics can be so dangerous–they kill off ALL bacteria, good and bad, completely disrupting our microbiome.
What is a fun fact about yourself?
In October 2015, after being diagnosed with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), Leaky Gut Syndrome, insulin resistance and hypothyroidism, and subsequently healing my symptoms naturally, I created Root + Revel. Though I’m a food writer—it’s literally my job to eat and report on the world’s most delicious foods—and a food lover, who believes strongly that life is not worth living without fried chicken, cheese and wine, I’ve also seen firsthand the power of nutrition and how much the food we eat affects the way we feel. After my diagnosis, I was blown away by the rapid transformation I saw in my own body from simple, natural and holistic lifestyle changes. Truly, the food I ate and the natural products I used (and the toxic products I tossed!) have helped me live a near symptom-free life, and I wanted to share what I’ve learned with all of you. Learn more about my diagnosis, 80-20 lifestyle and how I strike the balance between eating well and feeling well here.
