Earth Day Every Day at MDHQ

Blog Post Img

The final count is in: we saved 212 miles of ocean this Earth Day! Thanks to you, we more than doubled our goal!

From April 12-26 we donated 20 of our sales to Conservation International's Save a Mile program. Your purchases had an impact on your biome -- and on the ocean :D

Under the Sea

The ocean is an amazing place. With so many unfamiliar and weird plants, animals and places, there is much to enthrall and intrigue. Home to deep sea valleys to underwater volcanoes, camouflaging octopuses and garden eels, the ocean is a source of endless fascination and mystery. We've been exploring the underwater world for centuries -- and there's still so much more to discover!

Coral reefs are some of the most frequently admired realms of the ocean. Often discussed for their beauty and natural diversity, aren't just home to Nemo and his friends, though. What we think of as coral is actually a remarkable unit of microorganisms living in symbiosis and creating a beautiful and functional home, for themselves and for other ocean-dwellers.

Zooxanthellae (zo·o·xan·thel·la) and coral animals are entirely reliant on each other. The tiny coral animals create the hard coral scaffold where they live happily with the zooxanthellae, tiny photosynthetic algae who create food for the coral. Together, they lay the foundation for an ecosystem that carries more organisms than we can currently identify.

So the next time you're at the beach, toes burrowed into the warm sand, shades on, walk down to the water's edge. See the tangles of seaweed, the gulls sidling along the shore in search of snacks, the children playing in the water. Think about all of the organisms that come together to create the fascinating ecosystems below the water, and know that together, we've worked to keep the ocean healthy.

We see every day as Earth Day

We've taken strides to make environmentally-minded choices this month -- we've reduced our packaging, donated to Conservation International, and given away one year long discount every day to help our customers reduce their product and water usage.

But the changes don't stop there.

We're always looking for ways to keep nature in our daily lives, and bring ourselves back to our roots. In the coming months, we'll be working on expanding our product options to help our users transition to a healthy lifestyle where less is more. We'll keep growing and learning, and we hope you'll come along for the ride.

But for now, it's time to celebrate! So break out the bathing suits and get down to the beach. We know it's early, but we're itching to get out into the sun and play. Life is better by the ocean ;)
